This time around the youth students were tasked with one of the following:
1. Talking to a parent or guardian about their views and policies about fighting in school.
2. What “leadership” means to them.
3. Why they felt they deserved to move to the adult class.
At this time we would like to congratulate Joshua Gonzales for his exceptional work on this assignment! Please follow the link to see what Joshua had to say about “leadership”.
To take in or show respect to tohers and my fellow teammates. What I think leadership means to be a leader and always take full responsibility for your actions. I’m trying to say is to always follow the rules and never talk back to your teachers. In school you need to be a leader and hopefully your grades will improve.
What I need to work on is being respectful to my teachers and don’t talk back. And when I do these things I will get rewarded for my succeses. now since my grades improved I will be able to step myself up to be on track. And if my mom told Lynda or Jeremy I’ll get punished by them. Hopefully I can make every one proud of me for being a great student in and school and also in the gym.
When I’m at the gym I can show the little to younger kids to be respectful and not be a slacker. And they see how good of a role model I am tto them.

A cornerstone of the Dek Wat Muay Thai youth program philosophy is partnership. We believe that our youth truly are the future and must be supported and nurtured. A portion of our program is devoted life skills where your children will develop a wide range of abilities. We discuss a multitude of topics such as bullying and problem solving tactics. While we foster a disciplined physical training environment we absolutely believe that academia comes first and we partner with the parents to ensure that the children are maintaining their grades, to that end we have some stellar students and want to recognize their efforts in achieving fantastic marks in the fall semester of 2011. Please take a moment to congratulate these students as you see them. We are incredibly proud to be a part of their journey and their accomplishments.

Training for me now is about growing, learning and sharing that with others, especially other women who might not feel they are welcome in such a traditionally masculine space. Without a doubt, my favorite part of BJJ is teaching. I learn so much from it and I’ve always been a big nerd. Irregardless of your abilities, body type, age, or athletic experience, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone!.
Shawn Tamaribuchi currently holds the rank of black belt under World Champion Lana Stefanac. She has trained in Krav Maga as well as Muay Thai, and fought professional MMA where she had the opportunity to fight in the US, Japan and New Zealand. After her MMA career, she found a deep love and appreciation for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and started to devote the majority of her free time to training and teaching.
Despite having traveled and trained around the world, Shawn loves to call the Bay Area home. She has been teaching group classes for over ten years, working with local youth organizations on self defense and empowerment programs, as well as hosting women’s only open mats and workshop series.. Some of Shawn’s accomplishments include: Pro MMA fighter having fought for Fatal Femmes Fighting in LA, Smackgirl Japan, Princesses of Pain New Zealand, and FCC Oklahoma. But her greatest love for teaching stems from sharing what she has learned and hoping to pass on the love she holds for it.
